Who Sous is for

Hiring a chef isn't what you think.

Most of our customers told us they never imagined hiring a personal chef. Here's what they say now.

New parents

Dinner falls off the list

My nanny who made meals for us quit and Chef Maurice was an absolute lifesaver.

After the baby, dinner becomes the part of the day no one has bandwidth for. A chef who knows your family takes it off the list.

Hooked on DoorDash

Breaking the delivery habit

I got a fridge full of mix-and-match dishes and I've been eating like a queen for less than it would have cost to DoorDash McDonald's 8 times.

A fridge full of meat, veggies, sides, and sauces — built around what you actually like to eat. A weekly chef often costs about what your delivery habit already does.

Health-focused

Whole foods, every week

She's just been nailing it every single time. I think she just really knows us a lot more now.

Special occasions

The night that has to be perfect

5 courses, including one of the best risottos I've ever had. From the personalized menu to the wine pairings to the highest quality of ingredients, everything was perfect.

A chef brings the restaurant to your home for the night that has to be perfect.

Why Sous exists

Made for busy parents by busy parents.

When Craig's son Caiden was born, friends sent delivery gift cards. They came in handy — for the first few days. By week three, the family had eaten enough takeout to last a year, and Craig kept thinking the same thing:

“When Caiden was born, everyone was gifting me DoorDash. But I never needed a home-cooked meal more.”

So he and his cofounder Justin (pictured with his son, Max) built Sous: a way to find a vetted personal chef who comes to your kitchen, cooks the week of dinners you don't have time to cook, and leaves your kitchen cleaner than they found it.

Why families choose Sous

“I was laying in bed one day trying to think of a way to make things better for our life and randomly decided to google how much a personal chef would be. Sous came up — a chef coming to our home to meal prep once a week. My mind was completely blown.”

Common questions

Everything we get asked, answered.

If your question isn't here, message us — most replies are within an hour during the day.

A personal chef is a real chef who comes to your home and cooks for you. The difference from delivery or a meal kit is personalization: your chef builds the menu around your tastes and dietary goals, shops at your store, and cooks healthy, homemade food in your kitchen — made the way you like it.
Weekly meal prep typically runs $258–$282 in chef fees, with groceries billed separately as a reimbursement (most families spend a similar amount on groceries to what they were already spending on delivery). Special occasions for 8 guests with 3 courses run roughly $625–$680 in chef fees, also with groceries billed separately. Run a search above to see instant quotes in your city.
Groceries are billed separately as a reimbursement, on top of the chef fee. Your chef shops at the store you choose — usually wherever you'd shop yourself — and submits the receipts.

Every booking on Sous follows the same five steps:

  1. Request a chef. Pick the chef you like and tell them what you're looking for — service, date, household.
  2. Get on a call. Hop on a quick intro call. Talk through your tastes, kitchen, and goals.
  3. Chef sends a proposal. Your chef sends a quote and a menu, tailored to you. Tweak it together until it's right.
  4. Approve and book. Lock in your date with a 50% deposit. The balance is due after the service.
  5. Chef shops and cooks. Your chef shops at your store, cooks in your kitchen, and cleans up before they go.
Every Sous chef is interviewed, background-checked, and ServSafe-certified. Many have Michelin-star backgrounds, and every one has been vetted personally by our team. We select for cooking talent and exceptional hospitality.
We currently serve New York, New Jersey, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Las Vegas, including most surrounding neighborhoods. If you're nearby and don't see your area listed, message us — we add neighborhoods as chefs join.
Not at all. Many of our customers leave a key or a code and come home to a stocked fridge. Others love being around for the smell of dinner. Whatever works for your schedule works for us.
Yes. Allergies, gluten-free, dairy-free, kosher, halal, low-sodium, picky toddlers — your chef builds the menu around your family. The more specific you are, the better the food gets.
Switch chefs at any time, with no fee. Your relationship is week-to-week, and we make it easy to try someone new if the fit isn't right. Most families settle into one chef within their first month.
It's one of the reasons Sous exists. After a baby, dinner becomes the part of the day no one has bandwidth for. A weekly chef means a fridge full of real food without the planning, shopping, or cleanup.
On your own, you spend weeks vetting, interviewing, and negotiating — and you're the one handling payment, taxes, and replacements when someone falls through. On Sous, every chef is already vetted, every booking is handled, and every payment is held until your chef confirms. You pick a chef, you cook a week of dinners. That's it.
